Gaja’s exalted Sperss Barolo is crafted from 55 year old vines in the Marenca-Rivette sub-region of Serralunga. The vineyard site is an amphitheatre over 12 hectares at 370m/asl with soils of very compact clay-calcareous marls and a south/south-west facing exposure where the vines dig deep, have the advantage of cooling breezes and get plenty of nurturing sun.  The organically farmed, hand-harvested vines are gently macerated on skins for 3 weeks before being pressed off to mature in oak for 24 months.  The wine opens with aromas of violets, juniper, cherry, and ripe plum rise from the glass.  These notes glide onto the palate with subtle minerality and a firm tannin structure balanced against a silky acidity carrying nuances of forest floor, dark chocolate and pistachio that are overwhelmed by a wave of rich red and black fruits that marvels the senses with lingering layers on a very fine finish.
